Francisca is an artisan woman from the Community of Amazonas, who earned her living by creating handmade crafts for tourists. The sales she made helped her sustain her family, send her children to school, buy the supplies they needed to study, and take them to the hospital when they would get sick. Now, with the arrival of COVID-19 in the Amazon region of Loreto, all tourism activity has abruptly stopped, leaving Francisca with no source of income.
As she tries to better understand the virus and what its repercussions could mean for her small community, she has no other choice than to wait for humanitarian support to arrive with food and medical supplies. If she or any member in her community presents symptoms, they must travel hours by boat to get to the city, where the only three existing hospitals in the region have run out of tests, oxygen, respirators, and are low on medical staff. Even in the capital city, she won’t have access to basic medicine that would allow her to recover from the illness at home.
In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the most vulnerable and isolated populations will be the most affected ones. Like Francisca, many women in rural areas of the
Peruvian Amazon have done undeniably progressive work to build more just, equal, and violence-free communities, and just when they had found a way to thrive, this crisis
threatens their lives and impacts their fragile economy.

Without access to water, food, soap, medical supplies, and with most people living hours, and even days away from a health center (most running in precarious ways and lacking equipment for COVID-19), these communities we so dearly serve, face unprecedented risk and a terrifying reality from the spread of COVID-19.
In this situation, prevention is critical to face the pandemic and protect our communities.
Our response to COVID-19
With COVID-19 threatening the lives of hundreds of native communities in the Peruvian Amazon, we are focusing on 3 sustainable initiatives to mitigate its effects throughout the region:

TO COMMUNITIES
We are providing families in rural communities with medicine kits that include masks, hand
sanitizers, and medicine pills
recommended by the Peruvian Ministry of Health. Families will then be able to protect
themselves and counteract the effects of the disease in case of infection.
